The rolling farmlands of this Shire helped kickstart regional Victoria's food renaissance, and the choice around Daylesford still punches far above the town's size. Here's our little black book — from special-occasion tables to the pub we'd send anyone to, plus the cellar doors and sweet stops worth the detour. Book the big names ahead, especially on weekends.
Special occasion
Lake House — Two hats · Lakeside
The region's icon, on the banks of Lake Daylesford since 1984 — beautiful, cutting-edge seasonal food and an internationally acclaimed wine list. The place for a celebration of any kind. The culinary director Alla Wolf-Tasker continues to make this place shine.
Tuki Trout Farm — Modern Australian · Our favourite
The rustic charm of the restaurant with its sweeping views of the surrounding countryside belies an incredible dining experience. Most of the produce is sourced from the Tuki farm and cooked with absolute passion and respect. Don't miss this experience.
Kadota — Japanese · Kaiseki
Chef Aaron Schembri (trained in Japan and at a three-Michelin-starred Osaka restaurant) and Risa Kadota deliver a serene, degustation-style Japanese experience built on the concept of omotenashi — honest service, honest food.
Sault — Seasonal · Lavender fields · Our best local pick
Another of our favourites, and just down the road from Bellavita. High-class seasonal dining set among lavender rows on the Ballan–Daylesford Road — another brilliant local farm to plate eatery.
Bistro & lakeside
Bistro Terroir — French bistro
Daylesford's neighbourhood French bistro — dark timbers, a sun-dappled courtyard and classics like beef tartare, steak frites and crème brûlée, done really well.
The Boathouse — Lakeside
One of the few spots making the most of Lake Daylesford's water views, with a European-leaning menu that champions local produce — oysters, gin-cured ocean trout, grilled fish and pasta.
The Surly Goat — Hepburn Springs
An intimate Mediterranean-style room from the team behind Cliffy's — a quietly brilliant find in Hepburn Springs.
The local pub
Farmers Arms Hotel — Gastropub
Where much of Daylesford gathers on a Friday night — locally sourced food, nine local beers on tap and a proper beer garden.
Daylesford Hotel & Royal George — Pub classics
Reliable, hearty and welcoming — good for an easy family dinner after a day out. The fantastic Beppe wood-fired pizza team are now co-located at the Daylesford Hotel.
Cafes & brunch
Larder — Cafe · Providore
A Lake House spin-off on Vincent Street — slow-fermented sourdough, Dairy Flat Farm produce, Reuben sandwiches and stone-baked pizzas.
Cliffy's Emporium — Cafe · pantry
A Daylesford institution for great coffee, brunch and gourmet provisions to take home. Book ahead — it fills fast.
Wombat Hill House — Garden cafe
Set in the botanic gardens atop the hill — a charming spot for a leisurely lunch among the trees.
Harvest & Pancho — Brunch & coffee
Harvest for seasonal, locally sourced brunch just off the main street; Pancho for a concise, expertly made menu and a dog-friendly courtyard.
Cellar doors & sweet stops
Passing Clouds · Captain's Creek · Hanging Rock · Gisborne Peak — Wineries
Cool-climate sparkling, chardonnay and pinot poured at intimate cellar doors across the Macedon Ranges.
Sweet Decadence & The Chocolate Mill — Chocolate
Sweet Decadence has been making chocolates for 30+ years; The Chocolate Mill, just out of town, is famous for its sundaes.
Lavandula & La Trattoria — Farm cafe
Freshly baked goods, coffee and a glass of lavender champagne among the fields at this historic Swiss-Italian farm.
Menus and openings change with the seasons, and the region does lose the occasional favourite — we keep our house folder current, so ask us for the latest when you arrive.
